How this directory is built

1. The source

Listings come from the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Any organisation that bills Medicare or Medicaid, including medical equipment suppliers and pharmacies, must hold a National Provider Identifier and keep its registration current. CMS publishes the full registry monthly as a public-domain file.

We use the CMS NPPES Data Dissemination, August 2026 file (2026-08-10), which contained 9,726,865 records at the time of the build. Listings, place names and product evidence are all generated from a shared mobility-equipment database, so this site and any sibling site agree on the same facts rather than each deriving its own.

2. The filter

NPPES covers every kind of healthcare provider, so most of it is irrelevant here. We keep a record only if all of the following hold:

• It is an organisation, not an individual practitioner. That removed 7,767,205 records.
• It carries at least one NUCC taxonomy code describing a place a person can buy a mobility aid. That removed a further 1,749,330.
• It is not a delivery-only business. Suppliers registered solely for oxygen, dialysis, or enteral nutrition have no storefront relevance to crutches, and 7,669 were dropped on that basis.
• It has a US practice location with a street address and a city.
• It is not flagged as deactivated in the source file.

Taxonomy codes included

2b. What a supplier actually supplied

Registration says what a business is allowed to supply. It does not say what it did. For that we join a second federal file, Medicare Durable Medical Equipment, Devices & Supplies by Supplier and Service, which reports, for every supplier, each HCPCS product code they billed and how many people they served.

Where a supplier billed for equipment relevant to this site, the listing carries a green tag naming it. That tag is evidence: this business supplied walkers, or crutches, or wheelchairs, to Medicare patients in 2024. It is not a stock check, and the absence of a tag means very little, because most equipment is bought without Medicare and never enters billing data at all.

Both files are joined on the National Provider Identifier, and the mapping from HCPCS code to product category covers 1,251 of 1,251 codes present in the data.

3. Deduplication

Businesses commonly hold several NPIs, one per registered speciality, all at the same address. Records are merged when the state, city, street address, and business name all normalise to the same value. The surviving record keeps every taxonomy code from the group, and where the group disagrees we keep the entry that has a phone number and the most recent update date. 8,244 duplicate registrations were merged this build.

4. Geography

The city field in NPPES is free text typed by registrants, so it arrives full of abbreviations and misspellings. Each city name is normalised, expanded (ST to Saint, HTS to Heights, and so on), and matched against the U.S. Census Bureau 2024 Gazetteer place file. 12,830 cities matched an official Census place.

A further 343 were snapped to the correct place by fuzzy match, but only when the misspelling was within two characters and the coordinates agreed to within 25 miles. Both conditions are required, so two genuinely different towns are never merged.

1,389 place names did not match anything in the Census file and are kept exactly as registered. Most are neighbourhoods and USPS place names that are not incorporated places, such as Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Van Nuys. Folding those into their parent city would make the directory worse, not better, so they keep their own pages.

Coordinates come from Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area centroids, joined on each listing's ZIP. Distances shown are straight-line, not driving distance.

5. How listings are ordered

Ranking is not for sale, and there is no paid placement anywhere on this site. City pages list specialist equipment dealers first, then orthotics practices, then pharmacies, because that ordering matches how useful each is to someone shopping for crutches. Within a category, entries with a published phone number come first, then alphabetically. That is the whole algorithm.

Medical supply store: Usually carries underarm and forearm crutches, walkers, canes, and knee scooters. Most bill Medicare and private insurance, which needs a prescription from your doctor.

Pharmacy: Typically stocks basic aluminum underarm crutches off the shelf, sometimes a cane or a folding walker. Selection is thin and forearm crutches are rare.

Orthotics & prosthetics: The right call if you need crutches long term or need them fitted around a brace or prosthesis. Often carries forearm crutches that retail pharmacies never stock.

6. What this data cannot tell you

• Hours are not in the source. NPPES does not record them, and we would rather show nothing than guess.
• Closures lag. A business that shuts may stay in the registry for months.
• Not every crutch seller is here. A hardware store or a general retailer that stocks crutches without billing Medicare has no NPI and will not appear.
• Some listings are administrative. A handful of registered entities are billing offices rather than walk-in stores. The phone number is still the fastest way to tell.
• Straight-line distance. "12 mi" means as the crow flies, not by road.

7. Corrections

If a listing is wrong, closed, or in the wrong place, tell us and we will correct it in the next build. Business owners can also correct the underlying record directly with CMS through the NPPES system, which fixes it everywhere rather than only here.

8. Independence

No business pays to be listed, to rank higher, or to be removed. CrutchDirectory has no commercial relationship with any business in the directory. Some outbound links to online retailers on the buying guides are paid affiliate links, marked as sponsored; they sit outside the directory data entirely and cannot influence it.

9. Rebuild schedule

CMS publishes a full NPPES file monthly and weekly incremental updates. This build used the CMS NPPES Data Dissemination, August 2026 file (2026-08-10) and was generated on 2026-09-01. Each rebuild regenerates every page from source; nothing is edited by hand.
